O discurso direto mantém as palavras originais: "I am tired." O indireto muda o ponto de vista: "She said that she was tired."

Discurso direto e reported speech

O discurso direto repete as palavras exatas entre aspas:

  • Maria said, "I need help."
  • The teacher said, "The test is tomorrow."
  • Ken asked, "Where is the classroom?"

O reported speech comunica o sentido sem aspas:

  • "Maria said that she needed help."
  • "The teacher said that the test was the next day."
  • "Ken asked where the classroom was."

sujeito + reporting verb + "that" opcional + oração

  • "He said that he was busy."
  • "She told me that she liked the class."
  • "They explained that the answer was incorrect."

Na conversa, "that" costuma ser opcional:

  • "He said he was busy."
  • "She told me she liked the class."

  • "She said that the lesson was useful."
  • "She said to me that the lesson was useful." é possível, mas menos natural.

"tell" exige objeto pessoal:

  • "She told me that the lesson was useful."
  • Incorreto: "She told that the lesson was useful."

Direto Forma indireta comum Exemplo
present simple past simple "I work." → "He said that he worked."
present continuous past continuous "I am working." → "He said that he was working."
present perfect past perfect "I have finished." → "She said that she had finished."
past simple past perfect "I visited MOCA." → "She said that she had visited MOCA."
"will" "would" "I will call." → "He said that he would call."
"can" "could" "I can help." → "She said that she could help."
"may" "might" "I may go." → "He said that he might go."

O past perfect costuma permanecer igual:

  • Direto: "I had already eaten."
  • Indireto: "She said that she had already eaten."

  • Direto: "I enjoy the class."
  • Indireto: "She says that she enjoys the class."

  • Direto: "Los Angeles is in California."
  • Indireto: "He said that Los Angeles is in California."

  • "Mina said that she lives in Los Angeles."
  • "Mina said that she lived in Los Angeles."

A primeira enfatiza que Mina ainda mora lá. A segunda apenas relata a fala anterior.

Pronomes e possessivos

O reported speech muda o ponto de vista.

Direto:

  • Maria said, "I like my class."

Relatado por outra pessoa:

  • "Maria said that she liked her class."

Direto:

  • Alex told Mina, "I will help you with your homework."

Relatado por Mina:

  • "Alex told me that he would help me with my homework."

Identifique o falante original, o ouvinte e quem relata.

"today" "that day"
"tomorrow" "the next day" / "the following day"
"yesterday" "the day before" / "the previous day"
"now" "then"
"this week" "that week"
"last month" "the previous month"
"next year" "the following year"
"here" "there"
"this" "that"
"these" "those"
  • Direto: "I will meet you here tomorrow."
  • Depois, de outro lugar: "He said that he would meet me there the next day."

Com "where,", "when,", "why," ou "how,", mantenha a palavra interrogativa:

  • Direto: "Where do you live?"
  • Indireto: "She asked where I lived."
  • Incorreto: "She asked where did I live."

  • Direto: "Why are you studying English?"

  • Indireto: "He asked why I was studying English."

Para perguntas de sim/não, use "if" ou "whether":

  • Direto: "Do you understand?"
  • Indireto: "The teacher asked if I understood."
  • Indireto: "The teacher asked whether I understood."

  • "She asked where the station was."

Use quando a frase inteira é pergunta:

  • "Did she ask where the station was?"

Como relatar ordens e pedidos

Padrão: "told" ou "asked" + objeto + "to" + verbo base

  • Direto: "Open your book."
  • Indireto: "The teacher told us to open our books."

  • Direto: "Please repeat the sentence."

  • Indireto: "She asked me to repeat the sentence."

Para ordem negativa, use "not to":

  • Direto: "Do not be late."
  • Indireto: "He told me not to be late."

Escolha "asked" para pedido e "told" para instrução.

Reporting verbs e padrões úteis

  • "explain + that-clause": "She explained that the schedule had changed."
  • "promise + to-infinitive": "He promised to call."
  • "warn + object + not to": "She warned us not to wait outside."
  • "admit + gerund": "He admitted making the mistake."
  • "suggest + gerund": "She suggested reviewing the lesson."
  • "suggest + that-clause": "She suggested that we review the lesson."
  • "agree + to-infinitive": "They agreed to meet after class."

Nem todos aceitam o mesmo padrão:

  • Incorreto: "She suggested me to study."
  • Correto: "She suggested studying."
  • Correto: "She suggested that I study."

Erros comuns

Manter a ordem de pergunta

  • Incorreto: "He asked where was I going."
  • Correto: "He asked where I was going."

Usar "tell" sem objeto

  • Incorreto: "She told that she was ready."
  • Correto: "She said that she was ready."
  • Correto: "She told me that she was ready."

Mudar o tempo depois de verbo presente

  • Direto: "I need help."
  • Correto: "He says that he needs help."

Esquecer a mudança de perspectiva

  • Direto de Lina: "I finished my work."
  • Relatado por Sam: "Lina said that she had finished her work."

Usar "to" depois de "suggest."

  • Incorreto: "He suggested to take a break."
  • Correto: "He suggested taking a break."

A prática de escrita ajuda a reconhecer esses padrões antes de escrever textos longos.

Exercícios

  2. Leo said, "I visited The Last Bookstore yesterday."
  3. The teacher asked, "Do you understand the rule?"
  4. Mina asked, "Why are you learning English?"
  5. The teacher said, "Please finish the exercise."
  6. Carlos said, "I will give my presentation tomorrow."

Possíveis respostas:

  1. "Ana said that she was reading a new book."
  2. "Leo said that he had visited The Last Bookstore the day before."
  3. "The teacher asked if I understood the rule."
  4. "Mina asked why I was learning English."
  5. "The teacher asked us to finish the exercise."
  6. "Carlos said that he would give his presentation the next day."

Qual a diferença entre "said" e "told"?

"Said" não exige objeto pessoal. "Told" exige. Diga "She said that she was ready" ou "She told me that she was ready."

Como funcionam perguntas indiretas?

Elas usam ordem afirmativa.
