  • "The student studies every evening."
  • "The students study every evening."
  • "She watches English videos."
  • "They watch English videos."

"Be", "have" e "do" hanno forme particolari: "I am ready." / "He is ready." / "We are ready."; "She has a question." / "They have questions."

  • "The list of vocabulary words is on the desk."
  • "The students in the evening class are preparing for a presentation."
  • "A box of old books was donated."

In caso di dubbio, elimina temporaneamente le parole tra soggetto e verbo: "The list is on the desk." / "The students are preparing."

Soggetti composti

Due soggetti uniti da "and" richiedono normalmente un verbo plurale: "Reading and speaking are important skills." Se indicano una cosa sola, il singolare è possibile: "Macaroni and cheese is my favorite lunch."

Con "or", "nor", "either...or" e "neither...nor", il verbo concorda in genere con il soggetto più vicino.

  • "Either the teacher or the students are presenting today."
  • "Either the students or the teacher is presenting today."

Pronomi indefiniti

"Everyone", "someone", "anyone", "no one", "each", "either" e "neither" sono singolari.

  • "Everyone needs time to practice."
  • "Each of the students has a notebook."
  • "Neither of the answers is correct."

"Both", "few", "many" e "several" sono plurali. Con "all", "some" e "most", osserva il nome dopo "of": "Some of the water is cold." / "Some of the bottles are empty." Ripassa anche i pronomi inglesi.

Quantità e misure

Tempo, denaro e distanza prendono un verbo singolare quando rappresentano un totale: "Ten dollars is enough for lunch." / "Three hours is a long time to wait." Le frazioni concordano con il nome dopo "of": "Half of the cake is gone." / "Half of the cookies are gone."

"There Is" e "There Are"

  • "There is a notebook on the table."
  • "There are three notebooks on the table."
  • "There have been several changes in the schedule."

Nel parlato si può sentire "there's" davanti a un plurale, ma la scrittura standard preferisce "there are".

Nomi collettivi e titoli

In American English, "class", "team", "family" e "company" sono solitamente singolari quando il gruppo agisce come un’unità: "The class meets at 9:00." Per sottolineare i membri, scrivi "The students in the class have different goals." Anche i titoli sono singolari: "Great Expectations is a famous novel."
