Concordancia entre sujeto y verbo: reglas, ejemplos y errores comunes

El subject verb agreement exige que el sujeto y el verbo concuerden en número. Un sujeto singular lleva un verbo singular y uno plural, un verbo plural. Para una visión general, consulta la guía completa de gramática inglesa.

La regla básica

En presente simple, el verbo de tercera persona singular suele terminar en "-s" o "-es".

  • "The student studies every evening."
  • "The students study every evening."
  • "She watches English videos."
  • "They watch English videos."

"Be", "have" y "do" tienen formas especiales: "I am ready." / "He is ready." / "We are ready."; "She has a question." / "They have questions."

Encuentra el sujeto real

El sustantivo más cercano al verbo no siempre es el sujeto.

  • "The list of vocabulary words is on the desk."
  • "The students in the evening class are preparing for a presentation."
  • "A box of old books was donated."

Elimina temporalmente las palabras intermedias: "The list is on the desk." / "The students are preparing." La guía de sustantivos en inglés ayuda a reconocer el núcleo de una frase larga.

Sujetos compuestos

Dos sujetos unidos por "and" suelen llevar un verbo plural: "Reading and speaking are important skills." Si representan una sola cosa, el verbo puede ser singular: "Macaroni and cheese is my favorite lunch."

Con "or", "nor", "either...or" y "neither...nor", el verbo concuerda normalmente con el sujeto más cercano.

  • "Either the teacher or the students are presenting today."
  • "Either the students or the teacher is presenting today."

Si el resultado suena forzado, reformula la oración.

Pronombres indefinidos

"Everyone", "someone", "anyone", "no one", "each", "either" y "neither" son singulares.

  • "Everyone needs time to practice."
  • "Each of the students has a notebook."
  • "Neither of the answers is correct."

"Both", "few", "many" y "several" son plurales. Con "all", "some" o "most", mira el sustantivo después de "of": "Some of the water is cold." / "Some of the bottles are empty." Repasa también los pronombres en inglés.

Cantidades y medidas

El tiempo, el dinero y la distancia toman un verbo singular cuando representan un total: "Ten dollars is enough for lunch." / "Three hours is a long time to wait." Las fracciones concuerdan con el sustantivo después de "of": "Half of the cake is gone." / "Half of the cookies are gone."

"There Is" y "There Are"

"There" no es el sujeto real; el sujeto aparece después del verbo.

  • "There is a notebook on the table."
  • "There are three notebooks on the table."
  • "There have been several changes in the schedule."

Aunque en conversación se oye "there's" ante plurales, la escritura estándar prefiere "there are".

Sustantivos colectivos y títulos

En American English, "class", "team", "family" y "company" suelen ser singulares cuando el grupo actúa como unidad: "The class meets at 9:00." Para destacar a los miembros, escribe "The students in the class have different goals." Los títulos también son singulares: "Great Expectations is a famous novel."

Automatiza la concordancia con práctica

Conocer una regla y usarla con rapidez son habilidades distintas. Columbia West College (CWC) conecta Grammar, Speaking y Reading & Writing mediante un currículo integrado. English Speaking Success (ESS) incluye una clase diaria de Speaking de 80 minutos y ofrece 6 veces más práctica oral que una clase típica de listening and speaking.
