The present perfect tense connects a past action or situation with the present. In "I have visited Los Angeles," the experience happened before now, but the exact time is not the focus. In "I have lived here for 2 years," the situation began in the past and continues now.

A gerund is the "-ing" form of a verb used as a noun. In "Reading improves vocabulary," the word "reading" comes from the verb "read," but it acts as the subject of the sentence. Gerunds allow English speakers to name actions, activities, and experiences without changing them into separate abstract nouns.
