Conjunções em inglês: tipos, regras e exemplos

Conjunções em inglês: tipos, regras e exemplos

As conjunções ligam palavras, frases e orações e mostram a relação entre ideias. Sem elas, o inglês soa fragmentado: "I studied. I was tired. I finished the assignment." Com conjunções, a relação fica clara: "Although I was tired, I studied, and I finished the assignment."

Uma conjunção une elementos gramaticais: palavras como "coffee and tea", frases como "in the morning or after work" e orações como "I called her because I needed help."

"and" acrescenta informação, "but" mostra contraste, "because" apresenta uma razão e "if" estabelece uma condição.

Conjunções coordenativas e FANBOYS

FANBOYS reúne sete conjunções que ligam elementos equivalentes:

  • "for" razão: "We left early, for the road was getting busy."
  • "and" adição: "She studies grammar and pronunciation."
  • "nor" alternativa negativa: "He did not call, nor did he send a message."
  • "but" contraste: "The rule is simple, but the exceptions are difficult."
  • "or" escolha: "You can practice speaking or writing."
  • "yet" contraste inesperado: "The exercise was short, yet it was challenging."
  • "so" resultado: "The bus was late, so we walked."

I wanted to join the class, but I had to work." Não a use normalmente para ligar apenas palavras ou frases: "I practiced speaking and writing."

Conjunções subordinativas

Elas ligam uma oração dependente a uma independente. "Because I was tired" é incompleta; "Because I was tired, I made a mistake." é completa.

"because" indica razão, "when" tempo, "if" condição, "although" contraste e "so that" finalidade. Quando a oração dependente vem primeiro, use vírgula: "If you practice daily, your sentences will become more natural."

Conjunções correlativas

"both ... and," "either ... or," "neither ... nor" e "not only ... but also" funcionam em pares. Mantenha estruturas paralelas: "She wants to improve both speaking and writing."

Advérbios conjuntivos são diferentes

"however," "therefore" e "moreover" são advérbios conjuntivos.

  • Incorreto: "I studied the rule, however, I still made a mistake."
  • Correto: "I studied the rule; however, I still made a mistake."

Erros comuns

Não use "because" e "so" juntos na mesma relação. Escreva "Because it rained, we stayed home." ou "It rained, so we stayed home."

Use "I studied grammar, but I still made mistakes."

"although" precede uma oração, enquanto "despite" precede um substantivo ou forma em "-ing": "Although it was raining, we walked." / "Despite the rain, we walked."

Como praticar

Una duas frases curtas conforme a relação. "The exercise was difficult." e "I finished it." tornam-se "The exercise was difficult, but I finished it."
