Regras da vírgula em inglês: exemplos para escrever com clareza

As comma rules podem parecer confusas porque a vírgula desempenha várias funções. Ela não é apenas uma pausa; mostra a relação entre as partes da frase. Consulte também o guia completo de gramática inglesa.

Vírgulas em listas

Use vírgulas para separar três ou mais itens.

  • "I need a notebook, a pen, and a dictionary."
  • "She studies grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and writing."

A vírgula antes do último "and" é a Oxford comma. Usá-la de forma consistente reduz ambiguidades. Com dois itens, ela não é necessária: "I brought a pen and a notebook."

Antes de uma conjunção coordenativa

Use vírgula antes de "for", "and", "nor", "but", "or", "yet" ou "so" quando a palavra conecta duas orações independentes.

  • "I wanted to practice speaking, but I felt nervous."
  • "The lesson was difficult, so I reviewed it again."

Verifique se cada lado pode ser uma frase completa. Não use vírgula quando a conjunção liga apenas palavras, expressões ou dois verbos do mesmo sujeito: "He opened the document and checked the title." Veja a estrutura das frases em inglês.

Após elementos introdutórios

Uma palavra, expressão ou oração dependente inicial costuma ser seguida de vírgula.

  • "First, read the instructions."
  • "After class, we reviewed the homework."
  • "Because the bus was late, I missed the first activity."

Quando a oração dependente vem depois, normalmente não há vírgula: "I missed the first activity because the bus was late."

Ao redor de informações não essenciais

Uma informação adicional que não identifica a pessoa ou coisa fica entre vírgulas.

  • "My grammar teacher, who grew up in California, explained the rule."
  • "CWC, located in Los Angeles, welcomes students from many backgrounds."

Informações essenciais não levam vírgulas: "Students who practice every day build stronger habits."

Vocativo, Yes/No e tag questions

Separe o nome da pessoa chamada: "Maria, can you read the next sentence?" / "Thank you, everyone." Use vírgula depois de "yes" e "no": "Yes, I submitted the assignment." Use também antes de uma tag question: "You reviewed the rules, didn't you?"

Pratique na comunicação real

Columbia West College (CWC) conecta Grammar, Speaking e Reading & Writing em um currículo integrado. English Speaking Success (ESS) oferece uma aula diária de Speaking de 80 minutos, com 6 vezes mais prática oral que uma aula típica de listening and speaking. Organizar ideias ao falar também melhora a escrita.

Evite o Comma Splice

Um comma splice conecta duas orações independentes usando apenas uma vírgula.

Incorreto: "I studied the comma rules, I still made a mistake."

Correto: "I studied the comma rules. I still made a mistake." Correto: "I studied the comma rules, but I still made a mistake." Correto: "Although I studied the comma rules, I still made a mistake."

Vírgulas em citações

No American English, uma oração introdutória leva vírgula antes da citação direta: "The teacher said, 'Please check the final sentence.'" Se a citação vier primeiro: "'I understand the first rule,' Marco said." Uma citação integrada à gramática da frase não exige vírgula: "The phrase 'comma splice' names a specific error."

Datas, endereços e lugares

No formato month-day-year, use vírgula após o dia e o ano: "On September 8, 2026, the course will begin." Separe cidade e estado ou país: "She moved to Los Angeles, California, last year."

Erros comuns

Não separe o sujeito do verbo.

Incorreto: "The students in the morning class, need more notebooks." Correto: "The students in the morning class need more notebooks."

Coloque uma interrupção entre duas vírgulas: "The answer, however, is not complete." Decida pela estrutura, não pelo tamanho. Leia sobre habilidades de escrita eficaz.

  2. "I practiced reading writing and speaking."

Perguntas frequentes
